Truliant Federal Credit Union has partnered with several nonprofits in Greensboro and Burlington to provide an entrepreneurship experience for youth in summer camp at the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Clubs of Greensboro-Central Unit and for the Burlington Housing Authority.
Nearly 80 students in grades 9-12 are learning from successful entrepreneurs, gaining an understanding of entrepreneurship as a viable career option and are having a lot of fun doing it using the REAL Entrepreneurship curriculum from North Carolina REAL Enterprises, Inc. Students learn from real-world examples about concepts in business and finance.
The goals of Get REAL are to plant the seeds of entrepreneurial thinking skills, essential in a globally competitive society and to go beyond teaching students how to start a business by teaching them how to take charge of their future and the future of their community.
Students in Burlington are meeting for 5 weeks of business and financial literacy activities. They recently got a chance to visit the Burlington Member Financial Center. As one student walked out the door, she loudly exclaimed, “I want to be a teller” and a second student said, “ok I will start a credit union and you can work for me.” Now, that’s the idea!
