Local High School Students on the Job at Truliant Federal Credit Union
Students from West Forsyth High School’s Finance Academy got a glimpse of the inner workings of one of the largest credit unions in North Carolina, Truliant Federal Credit Union on Wednesday, October 25, 2006. Speakers from all areas of the Credit Union shared their experiences with more than 30 students.
“Involvement in our schools is an involvement in our future.” said Robyn Windsor, Member Financial Center Manager. “I am so proud that Truliant can be a part of this program and ‘bring to life’ what students learn in the classroom.”
The Finance Academy at West Forsyth is part of a national program that introduces students to the broad career opportunities in the financial services industry. Under the direction of their teacher, Leslie Martin, students take specialized courses along with their standard classes and participate in activities like visiting area businesses and internships.
Students visiting Truliant spent the day learning about the operations of a full-service financial institution. Additionally, students participated in discussions on leadership and the importance of using and building credit wisely. They also learned about the uniqueness of not-for-profit financial cooperatives, credit unions, which return their profits to their members in the form of better rates and low or no-fee services.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to 'enhance the quality of life of our community'. The lessons learned today were life lessons," said Matthew Mecham, Member Financial Center Manager.
