Our MyWhy panel selected dance instructor Chandra McCloud as our second $25,000 winner for the Charlotte region.
McCloud is a longtime dance educator at a Charlotte arts school. She found out about Truliant’s MyWhy contest in March. After thinking about how she would enter the contest, which asked Charlotte-Mecklenburg residents to tell Truliant the ways they would use $25,000 to improve their lives, she came up with an idea. McCloud originally wanted to use the funding to make a down payment on a house. But an encounter with her students changed her mind.
One recent Monday morning three of her students came in to school and said they’d all been accepted into summer dance intensives. These intensives are about refining technique and performance, broadening their understanding of dance styles and making connections that could, one day, benefit them greatly. However, her students told her that although they were accepted into the intensives, that attending wouldn’t be an option because none could afford the tuition. Tuition for intensive training can easily range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more.
When the will to achieve and grow is there, but the financial constraint for her students is too high, it’s an emotional rollercoaster for them, McCloud said. That’s when she decided her contest entry should be about helping her students. She submitted her winning MyWhy video about this via YouTube.
McCloud said she will use the $25,000 MyWhy funding to start a scholarship fund that would help students with tuition, buy dance attire for those who cannot afford to and arrange dance-related field trips.
Our MyWhy panel was touched by McCloud’s desire to help students realize their dreams and improve their lives. That’s our goal for all Truliant members!
