Truliant Employee Selected for International Credit Union Leadership Program

Release date: 6/19/2012

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 20, 2012) – Truliant lending specialist Mayra Gamarra was recently selected to participate in the International Credit Union Leadership Program as one of nine U.S. credit union professionals travelling to Guatemala June 10-23. The World Council of Credit Unions conducted interviews, and Gamarra was selected to participate in this prestigious program where she will live with a host family and intern at a Guatemalan credit union.

“We are very proud of and excited for Mayra.” said Cindy Kanaley, Truliant operations manager. “She will be a great ambassador for Truliant and our core philosophy of enhancing our member’s financial lives.”

The International Credit Union Leadership Program is designed to facilitate idea exchanges, promote foreign language skills development, enhance cultural diversity and improve problem-solving skills as they relate to credit union development and management on a global basis. In addition, participants will focus on finding new ways to attract younger members to their credit unions.

“Credit unions worldwide share core values of member-ownership and a strong focus on understanding and meeting member needs,” said Kanaley. “This program shows our commitment reaches far beyond our local community, highlighting the core philosophy of member-owned credit unions worldwide.”

The International Credit Union Leadership Program, which is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Office of Citizen Exchanges, is part of the larger U.S. Department of State Professional Fellows Program. The program offers young credit union professionals an opportunity to participate in internship programs both here and abroad.

In total, 10 U.S. participants were selected to intern at Guatemalan credit unions, and 10 U.S. participants were selected to intern at Dominican Republic credit unions. U.S. credit union leagues in Wisconsin, California, Iowa and North Carolina are working with credit unions and employees to host 10 representatives from Guatemala and 10 representatives from the Dominican Republic in these states.
